Anime, also known as Japanimation, is a form of hand-drawn and computer animation that originated in Japan. The term "anime" is derived from the English word "animation" and is used in Japan to refer to all types of animated media. However, outside of Japan, the term specifically refers to animation produced in Japan or in a Japanese-influenced style, characterized by vibrant colors, unique characters, and imaginative themes. This broad definition of anime opens up the possibility for animated works from other countries to also be considered as anime.

The history of Japanese animation dates back to 1917, with the earliest commercial productions. It wasn't until the 1960s, with the works of legendary animator Osamu Tezuka, that a distinctive art style began to take shape. Throughout the second half of the 20th century, anime gained a significant following both domestically and internationally. Anime can be distributed through various mediums, including theatrical releases, television broadcasts, home media, and online streaming platforms.

In addition to original content, many anime are adaptations of popular Japanese manga (comics), light novels, or video games. Over the years, production techniques for anime have evolved alongside advancements in technology. As a multimedia art form, anime combines elements of graphic art, characterization, cinematography, and various creative techniques. Unlike traditional animation, anime often prioritizes the realism of settings and incorporates camera effects such as panning, zooming, and unique angles.

One of the distinguishing features of anime is its diverse range of art styles and character designs. From exaggerated features to realistically proportioned characters, anime offers a wide spectrum of visual styles. Emotive eyes, whether large and expressive or smaller and more realistic, are a common characteristic of anime characters. The genre of anime encompasses a wide range of themes and narrative styles, catering to both mainstream audiences and niche interests.
